Buy a 1943 Daisy Red Ryder- the sought after BB gun from a Christmas Story

The most famous scenes from the film A Christmas Story is in fact, Ralphie’s “official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time.” This phrase alone can be heard 30 times throughout the movie. It’s no surprise that this well-loved BB gun has been the most sought-after prop for people who are fans of the film.

As of November 2015, the prop been missing from the A Christmas Story House and Museum’s collection. The exhibit was one of the limited version Christmas Dream rifles, which was made in 1983 as a tribute to the gun featured in the movie.

Although Daisy manufactured six guns for use in the film, prior to then , the Red Ryder version with a compass and sundial had never existed. Author Gene Shepherd had created this imaginary rifle, and could have confused it in comparison to that of the Buck Jones rifle that Daisy produced, which does have a compass and sundial. It’s true that Red Ryder just rolls off the tongue a little easier then Buck Jones!

After the movie’s filming, the 6 Red Ryder prop rifles were split between different production team members, one went into film archives while one was given to Ralphie himself, Peter Billingsley, never to be seen again. That is, until someone contacted us with a promising potential lead!

The person who contacted us via email provided a direct link to a listing from a collectibles company, The Prop Master. They’d gotten one of these extremely rare gems and were looking to purchase it for $10,000. Following a little investigation it was discovered that the gun in question had been owned by a gentleman named Gary Meck. Meck, who was the producer asset manager of A Christmas Story, was looking to sell off his piece of The Christmas Story memories!
