Peoria woman found guilty of leaving crash that killed 10-year old

PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) – The woman charged in a November hit-and-run that took the life of 10-year-old Troy Erving has been found guilty, but the case isn’t being considered murder.

Karrie Brunswig, 44, was arrested earlier this year on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated DUI, and driving on a suspended license.

Erving was riding his bike home from a friend’s house when he was hit Tuesday, November 9 around 7:15 pm on the 1600 block of Northeast Glen Oak Avenue. The state’s case claims Brunswig and a friend were driving on the northeast, when they felt a bump in the road and failed to stop, believing it was a deer. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood previously ruled Troy Erving’s death a homicide, due to the circumstances surrounding his death.

After Brunswig’s friend saw a news report on the accident, she went to the police station and told officers believing they could be the ones that hit Troy. She admitted to drinking and doing drugs while at a local gas station. Police traced a broken piece of a headlight back to Brunswig and her truck within twelve hours, arresting her the following day.

The prosecution says the family asked for a full trial, and thought the current charges weren’t enough. Troy Erving’s mother, Ariel Ivory, says his youngest siblings still don’t fully understand.

“I have a constant reminder of him every day,” she says. “He’s got three younger brothers that still don’t know that he’s really gone, they still ask for him. So I have to deal with them every day.”

Brunswig faces up to 30 years in prison. Her sentencing is scheduled at 10 am on September 29.
