ROCKFORD: Bustos, Durbin & Duckworth Announce Nearly $6.8 Million in Infrastructure Funding for Rockford Airport Authority

ROCKFORD — Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17), a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, joined Sen. Dick Durbin other Tammy Duckworth to announce that nearly $6.8 million from the US Department of Transportation has been awarded to the Rockford Airport Authority for infrastructure improvements. The grants will be used to construct a taxiway and install taxiway lighting at Chicago Rockford International Airport.

“As the fastest growing air cargo hub in the world, the Chicago Rockford International Airport is powering jobs and economic growth across Northwest Illinois. By funding infrastructure upgrades, we’re investing in our region’s future,” said Congresswoman Bustos. “Today, I’m thrilled to join Sens. Duckworth and Durbin to announce that the RFD is expected to receive nearly $6.8 million in funding from the Federal Aviation Administration to construct a new cargo runway — paving the way for continued growth.”

“Investing in the Chicago Rockford International Airport’s infrastructure will drive economic growth throughout Northern Illinois,” said Senator Durbin. “This ongoing expansion of RFD continues to create more good-paying jobs for Illinoisans, and I’ll keep working with Senator Duckworth and local leaders to help bring more federal support to the airport.”

“Making sure Chicago Rockford International Airport continues to have support for its infrastructure is critical to good-paying, local jobs and a safe and efficient traveler experience,” Senator Duckworth said. “I’m proud to join Senator Durbin and Congresswoman Bustos in announcing this infusion of federal resources to support an important transportation and economic hub within our state.”

The US Department of Transportation authorized $2,888,773 in entitlement funding and $3,910,437 in discretionary funding. The grant will fund the construction of a new Taxiway P – a 4,267-foot taxiway with connectors to provide access to the south cargo apron. This project also installs a new Taxiway P lighting system to enhance safe airfield operations during low visibility conditions.
