ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The City of Rockford broke ground for its new library on Wednesday. It did so after the old Rockford Public Library was traced back to contaminating chemicals.
The new project will cost around $ 33 million and is the next step in redesigning downtown Rockford. Many other projects are taking place in the city, including the construction of an 82 apartment complex directly across from this new project on Wyman Ave.
“More than $ 30 million project, right next to it you have a six-story $ 20 million project right down the street. They have a brand new new build, the first residential building, which will have retail on the first floor and apartments on the second and third floors. Lots of new things are happening downtown and we’re continuing to rejuvenate the city center, ”said Mayor Tom McNamara.
