- The brand-new Mercedes-Benz ESprinter is a versatile all-rounder , with an impressive trifecta of efficiency, range , and capacity for load.
- Mercedes-Benz Vans is the most electrifying vehicle in North America: For the first time, American customers can make their fleet more sustainable by purchasing a locally emission-free, battery-powered van that sports the Mercedes star.
- The cargo van version of the brand-new eSprinter with the most range will be available in the U.S. and Canada in the second half of 2023, and the introduction in Europe will follow toward the end of 2023.
- Production network expanded: The all-new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter will be produced in Charleston (South Carolina/USA) and Ludwigsfelde, Germany in the future in addition to the Mercedes-Benz plant in Dusseldorf.
Mercedes-Benz Vans is constantly electrifying all model series. The brand new eSprinter is impressive in terms of efficiency, range and capacity to load and is a true cosmopolitan: Produced throughout North America and Europe, it will further prove its promise to “Lead in Electric Drive” with over 60 countries in the future.
The all-new eSprinter comes with a multitude of technical innovations and is based on an entirely new concept consisting of three modules. They allow the most freedom in the development and design of various superstructures and conversions that were previously only available on the traditional Sprinter.
The front panel, a uniformly-designed front section comprises all high-voltage components and is able to be used with any vehicle model regardless of wheelbase or battery size. The module for the integrated high-voltage battery is located under the body to save space. The battery is placed between the axles together with the robust battery housing, results in an extremely low center of gravity, which has a positive effect on handling and increases driving safety. The third element of the modular structure is the rear component that has an electrically powered rear axle. Following the principle of the common parts strategy this is employed in all variants of the all-new eSprinter. The compact and powerful electric motor is also included in the rear module.
Mercedes-Benz has invested 350 million euros to develop the brand new eSprinter. About 50 million euros will be invested in each of the three plants located in Charleston, Dusseldorf and Ludwigsfelde to adapt their production. The modular concept of the brand new eSprinter allows maximum synergies in production and therefore, corresponding economics of scale.
Mathias Geisen, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, is convinced: “The new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter consistently follows our strategy – to be the leader in electric mobility with the most desirable vans while achieving profitable growth worldwide.”
The all-new eSprinter is versatile and efficient
The market launch of the brand new eSprinter will commence in the U.S. and Canada in the second half of 2023. It is a long cargo van with an elevated roof. It comes with the largest battery available, which has a usable capacity of 112 kilowatts. The capacity of the battery is 488 cubic feet, and the maximum gross vehicle weight is 4.25 tons.
The electric range that is based on a simulation using the WLTP cycle can be as high as 400123 kilometers (~248.5 miles). The simulated range , based on the WLTP city cycle will be as high as 500123 kilometers (~311 miles). These ranges also make the vehicle ideal for longer journeys.
“With the new eSprinter, we are taking the electric large van segment to a new level. The triad of efficiency, range and load capacity with simultaneous TCO optimization makes the new eSprinter the most versatile Mercedes-Benz eVan ever,” says Mathias Geisen.
HighlightsYou aren’t able to see it on the outside of the all-new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, but if you look at the technology used in the vehicle, as well as the cloud-based services in the Mercedes me connect4 digital ecosystem, it becomes clear that the focus is always on added benefit for customers.
The electric powertrain (eATS)
The main components of the eATS in the all-new eSprinter are two brand new innovations which include the efficient motor and the unique rear axle with electric power, both of which are being made available for the first time on a battery-powered electric van from Mercedes-Benz.
The permanent magnet synchronous motor that weighs just 286 lb., is characterized by particularly high efficiency and an optimized thermal management. The motor comes in two different power levels, offering 100 or 150 kilowatts of peak power, and has an output of up to 400 newton meters (~295 ft.lb. ).
High-voltage battery and charging
When it launches, North American customers will be offered the largest battery for the new MercedesBenz eSprinter. It has a the capacity of 113 Kilowatt hours. Lithium/iron phosphate (LFP) cell chemistry allows the battery models to be free of nickel and cobalt and active thermal management guarantees maximum efficiency.
As with all Mercedes-Benz eVans new models, the eSprinter is able to charge using both the alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). The on-board charger converts the current in the vehicle while charging with AC, for instance at a Wallbox, can output up to 9.6 kilowatts. The latest eSprinter can be charged with up to 1155 kilowatts in fast-charging stations.
For customers, fast charging means charging from 10 to 80 percent of full capacity6 takes approximately 42 minutes for a 113 kWh battery.
Digitization and infotainment using MBUX
The brand new eSprinter also stands out with its digitization capabilities and infotainment. It is equipped with the cutting-edge Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) with the most recent software technology that was previously only available to customers of Mercedes-Benz passenger automobiles. Many features and options make everyday existence with an electric car easier for customers.
Navigation with “Electric Intelligence” ensures the greatest possible planning certainty For instance, it shows the present range in real time in relation to the current traffic situation and the terrain of the road. It calculates also the best charging strategy to reach the destination as fast as feasible, or to achieve the desired state of charge (SoC) at the destination. The charging station’s authentication is simple using MBUX with payment through Mercedes me. Other highlights include increased performance, extensive personalization options, and optimizations of the “Hey Mercedes” voice control assistant.
Mercedes-Benz Vans’ strategy for electrification
Mercedes-Benz Vans has firmly anchored its leadership aspiration for electric mobility in its strategy. By introducing the Vito E-CELL, Mercedes-Benz Vans was already an early adopter in the market for local emission-free vans in the year the year 2010. The present day, Mercedes-Benz has electrified all segments of the van, from the small to the mid-size van as well as the larger van.
In the middle of the decade Mercedes-Benz Vans will be implementing the next stage of its electrification strategy with VAN.EA (MB Vans Electric Architecture) from 2025 onwards, all new models will be entirely electric.
