ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Residents on the south side of Rockford say they want to see positive change in their neighborhoods, so dozens grabbed a pair of gloves and a trash bag to clean up one street at a time on Saturday afternoon.
Volunteers, religious leaders and city councils led the event. Program Director Cira Richardson said the group picked up trash from 11th St. Plaza on Brook Road. She said this is a way for the community to see immediate change that will hopefully encourage more people to get involved as much as possible.
“People thanked you,” said Richardson. “People have asked why you are doing this? We got people to say, are you getting paid for this? So being able to tell them that we are only here to support and love the neighborhood was good for us and good for the person who asked us in my opinion. “
