Marilyn Tolliver Obituary (1943 – 2022) – Effingham, IL

Marilyn Carrol Tolliver, age 78, of Effingham, Illinois, passed away surrounded by family at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, on September 23, 2022.
She was born October 25, 1943, in Olney, Illinois, the daughter of William Eldon and Mary Edna (Devore) Compher. She married Jerry L. Tolliver on February 28, 1964, in Louisville, Illinois. They celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Marilyn was a school teacher for 34 years, teaching at St Anthony, Shumway, and Effingham Unit 40 before retiring in 1999. She spent most of those years in third grade at West Side School in Effingham, and some of her students may remember churning butter, making bread from scratch, and square dancing in her class. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Effingham and an active participant in the Hope Circle women’s group. She and Jerry enjoyed traveling and were able to visit all corners of the US including Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, and Florida, and many places in between. She helped care for the roses at church, and she was always on the lookout for a good gluten free recipe. Most of all, she loved spending time with her kids and grandkids and attending their activities.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry; daughter Shelly (Norman) Weinandy of Lake in the Hills, Illinois; son Marty (Tracy) Tolliver of Tolono, Illinois; 4 grandchildren: Seth Tolliver, Avery Tolliver, Ethan Weinandy, and Evan Weinandy; one great granddaughter, Kennedy; one brother-in-law, William (Linda) Tolliver of Louisville, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents: Eldon and Mary Compher; her stepmother: Mabel Compher; her sister Beverly “Joyce” Barbee and brother-in-law Wilford “Hank” Barbee; her sister Lucille Wagley and brother-in-law Robert Wagley; and an infant sister: Doris Louise.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church in Effingham. Burial will be in Orchard Hill Cemetery in Louisville. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, October 1, 2022 prior to the service at the church. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home at Effingham.
