People across the nation will spend time today honoring the men and women who have died serving their country in the US military.
In the Rockford area, several events are planned. All events are open to the public.
Memorial Day parade
Rockford’s parade kicks off at 9 am The parade features area veterans organizations, school bands, police and fire departments and organizations that support veterans. The parade will line up near the intersection of Seventh Street and Sixth Avenue and run the city’s standard parade route north to State Street and west to Wyman Street.
Veterans Memorial Hall Memorial Day program
When the parade ends, area dignitaries will gather on North Wyman Street between Mulberry Street and Jefferson Street in downtown Rockford for the Veterans Memorial Hall Memorial Day program. Speakers will be followed by a Memorial Day rose ceremony and the playing of Taps.
Sinking of the Ship Ceremony
After the conclusion of the Memorial Day program at Veterans Memorial Hall, Rockford’s Navy Club Ship #1 will host the annual Sinking of the Ship ceremony, including a wreath presentation and a 21-gun salute by the Rockford Detachment Marine Corps League, on the banks of the Rock River behind the Luther Center at State and Wyman streets.
Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony
At 11 am Monday, the annual Memorial Day commemoration event will take place at the LZ Peace Memorial at Midway Village & Museum Center, 6799 Guilford Road, Rockford. This year’s guest speaker will be Capt. Jason Church, US Army, who lost both of his legs while serving in Afghanistan.
