CHAMPAIGN, Ill.— The Illinois men’s tennis team swept the doubleheader against Wichita State and Bryant in Tempe, Ariz. on Saturday afternoon.
Wichita State, 6-1
The Illini started off with doubles action, with Karlis Ozolins and William Mroz defeating Richey King and Misha Kvantaliani, 7-6 (3).
Oliver Okonkwo and Mathis Debru also picked up a doubles win, defeating Duccio Petreni and Luke Bracks 6-2. Lucas Horve and Hunter Heck lost to Kristof Minarik and Alex Richards, 4-6.
Heck, however, demolished in singles play, beating Minarik, 6-0, 6-1. Ozolins battled in his singles play, ultimately beating Kvantaliani, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Mroz, Okonkwo and Debru all won their singles matches – Mroz, 6-3, 6-4 against Richards, Okonkwo 6-3, 6-1 against Bracks and Debru 6-4, 7-6 (2) against King. Kenta Miyoshi lost his match, 4-6, 4-6 to Alejandro Jacome.
Bryant, 4-0
The short-lived sweep started with a 6-3 doubles win from Ozolins and Mroz against Leonardo Mileikowsky and Will Pellegrini, as well as a 6-2 doubles win from Okonkwo and Debru against Jean-Christophe Baril and Aryaan Sen.
Heck and Horve’s match went unfinished.
Heck continued his singles winning streak with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Mileikowsky, with Okonkwo winning 6-1, 6-1 over Diego Trejo. Ozolins took his victory over Nick Lorenz, 6-2, 6-2.
Mroz, Miyoshi and Debru’s matches went unfinished.
The Illini will be back in action at Kentucky on Jan. 21 at 12 pm in Lexington, KY
