BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois State men’s tennis team improved to 3-0 to start the spring season for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign, thanks to a pair of wins Sunday over IUPUI and Chicago State at the Evergreen Racquet Club.

“What a fantastic weekend and start to the season,” ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. “We played three very tough teams and I was so proud of the guys handled it. I’m sure many of the guys are exhausted, but credit to them all for finishing off the weekend on a strong note. Hopefully we can keep it going next weekend.”

In the early match of the day against IUPUI, the Redbirds fell behind early after losing the doubles point but rallied to win five of the six singles matches to come away with a 5-2 win over the Jaguars. Nam Pham, Arvid Hjalte, Adrian Dibildox and Dominick Cuchran each picked up straight-set victories, while Melker Isaksson picked up a three-set victory at the No. 3 spots to end things on a high note.

The Redbirds returned to the court against Chicago State after a break and came out strong, winning the doubles point to take an early advantage. the no 1 team of Dibildox and Hjalte defeated Pedro Alvarez and Max Sandoval by a score of 6-3 and the No. 2 duo of Isaksson and Tin Ostro took down CSU’s Rodrigo Alves and Arhaan Pahwa, 6-2, to stake ISU to the early lead.

Just as in the first match of the day, the Redbirds won five of the six singles matches in the evening session to come away with the 6-1 victory over the Cougars. Pham and Dibildox were both winners once again and were joined this time by Tomas Valencia and Tin Ostro who both posted straight-set wins. Once again, it was Isaksson who picked up the final win for the Redbirds as they came away with their third team win to open the spring season.

The Redbirds return to action on Friday, Jan. 27, for a lunchtime match at Ball State, before heading to Champaign, Illinois, on Saturday for matches against Butler (2 pm) and the host Illini (6 pm).
