CHAMPAIGN, Ill.— A busy weekend of tennis that saw Illinois State play three matches in two days wrapped up on Sunday, as the Redbirds traveled to nearby Champaign, Illinois, to compete against the Butler Bulldogs and the host Illini. Unfortunately for the Redbirds, it was tough going as Butler picked up a 4-1 win over ISU and the Illinois collected a 6-1 victory to wrap up the weekend.
“Overall, I was really happy with how we played today,” ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. “Some of the guys are a little banged up and yet gave it everything they had. I was very happy with how our young guys are progressing and playing up to the level needed at Division I. Shout out to Nam (Pham) for his win tonight at Illinois, which was one of the best matches I’ve seen him play in his career.”
In the early match of the day against Butler, the Redbirds fell behind early after losing the doubles point and picked up their lone point of the match courtesy of freshman Tin Ostro, who took down Butler’s Aidan William 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot before the fourth and final point was clinched by the Bulldogs.
In the night match against the Illini, it was a tough task for the Redbirds except for Pham who picked up the win at the No. 1 spot. He won the first set over William Mroz 7-5 but dropped the second by a score of 5-7 to send the match to the tiebreaker. It was a fight the entire way, but ultimately Pham rallied to pick up the 10-8 in the third set to get the point for the Redbirds.
ISU next travels to the state of Arkansas for three matches next weekend. The road trip begins with a match in Fort Smith against Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday, before traveling to Fayetteville for a doubleheader on Sunday against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
