Central Illinois Regional Airport has been around since the 1920s, when the airfield was privately owned, according to its website.
The airport was officially dedicated in 1934 and is officially governed by the Bloomington-Normal Airport Authority, which was formed in 1964.
There are over 70 miles of pavement on the airfield side alone, while over 700 acres of the airport’s property are leased for farming, according to the website. Nearly 90 hangars of various sizes are leased to private owners.

How much is parking at CIRA?
Every parking spot is free at Central Illinois Regional Airport, according to the website.
Short-term parking for two hours or less is available in front of the terminal building. Long-term parking is unlimited for anything over two hours and is available as long as travelers use an airline or car rental service.
A complimentary parking shuttle is available to travelers by using the designated phone in the baggage claim area or calling (866) 967-2472.
Hours for the shuttle are:
- 4 am to the last arriving flight, Sunday and Wednesday.
- 4 am to 4 pm, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
- 10 am to the last flight arriving on Saturday.

Tips for first-time flyers
Below is a list of tips for people taking their first flight.
- Arrival is recommended at 2 hours prior to your flight.
- Dress comfortably and be sure to wear easily removable shoes.
- Know your baggage restrictions. Be sure to check with your airlines before you go.
- Downloading the associated apps can help you skip the line unless you have a checked bag and allow you to print your boarding pass in advance.
- Passengers can check in online up to 24 hours before a flight. It is recommended to do so no less than 45 minutes prior.
- Be sure to have all travel-related documents ready and available. These include but are not limited to: TSA identification information, passport or visa if needed, and a driver’s license or state-issued identification (Real ID needed beginning May 7, 2025). Children ages 2 to 17 are not required to show an ID. However, a birth certificate is required for children under the age of 2.
- Dry snacks are permitted.
- Drinks can be purchased after the security checkpoint.
- Suggested items for travel include a charged cell phone, a cell phone charger, headphones, pre-downloaded music, pre-downloaded movies and a travel pillow.
