3 from Rockford earn national honor for excellence in pool and classroom

The USA Swimming Association recently released its list of 2022 Scholastic All-Americans for this high school academic year, and three Rockford-area standout swimmers made the list.

Hononegah’s Gracie Colvin, Rockford Christian’s Brooke Corrigan and Harlem’s Jeremy Mueller all made the cut and are on this year’s elite list. The list honors 1,281 athletes (686 boys and 595 girls) from ninth-12th grade across the nation. To be eligible, they had to have maintained a minimum 3.5 grade-point average from Sept. 1, 2021–August 31, 2022, and must have also met competition criteria of achieving a Winter Junior Nationals qualifying time in 2022.

“I’ve always wanted to be a Scholastic All-American, so being able to finally achieve that is humbling and pretty surreal,” Colvin said of the honor. “In swimming, you’re going to have way more failures than successes. It’s just about trying to keep pushing, plugging along, and not giving up because you get what you give in the sport of swimming.”

Colvin, a senior, maintained a 3.9 GPA over the year and has Winter Junior National qualifying times in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 26.64 and in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.83. She swims with USA Swimming Club McGuire Aquatics and Hononegah, and she has recently committed to further her education and swim for University of Arkansas next year.

Corrigan, a sophomore who maintained a 4.0 GPA over the year, has a Winter Junior National qualifying time in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 26.41. She swims with the Rockford Marlins and Rockford Christian.

Hononegah's Gracie Colvin warms up before practice on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2022, at NorthPointe Wellness in Roscoe.

Mueller is a senior, and he maintained a weighted GPA of 4.3 over the academic year and has a Winter Junior National qualifying time in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.49. He swims with USA Swimming/YMCA Swimming Club at the Rockford YMCA Stingrays and for Harlem. He is undecided on his where he will attend college.

“This is a really big deal, and these three are really deserving,” said Brian McGuire, coach at Hononegah, and at McGuire Aquatics. “It’s just great to honor our kids for their grades and their athleticism.

“These are really the kind of things to celebrate.”

The Winter Junior National Championship meet will be held Dec. 7-10, 2022 in Austin, TX. The junior nationals are one step below the national championships.
