In 1921, the 35th annual reunion of the 76th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, was due to meet in Kankakee the next week. Only seven infantry soldiers who fought in the Civil War remained in Champaign County.
In 1971, Champaign County clerk Dennis Bing admitted to a group of 40 UI students that he “disapproved of the laxity of the description of residence” when determining whether a college student was in his college -City to choose. “The fact that a student has lived in a university town for the required time does not entitle him to vote there.
