Donald M. Peterson Obituary – Rockford Register Star

Donald M. Peterson, 93, of Rockford, IL passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022. He was born January 12, 1929 in Rockford, IL to Melvin and Anna (Marhon) Peterson. He graduated from Stillman Valley High School in 1947. His fondest memories of his youth were of him playing basketball. Don married Joanne (Swenson) on February 20, 1954. in Rockford, IL. Don served our country as a military policeman during the Korean War. During his service, Don was honored to escort Bob Hope to his destination to entertain the troops. Afterwards, he worked at Illinois Bell for 41 years until he retired in 1991.

Don spent as much time as he could fishing. His favorite summertime destinations included Pierce Lake and Lakes Waubesa, Minocqua, and Big Silver in Wisconsin. Don was known for having the best fish fries.When he wasn’t fishing, Don loved to solve the world’s problems over coffee with the guys and watching the Chicago Bears. In his last days, his biggest joys were seeing his great grandchildren, Elsie and Brooks, and solving puzzles.

Don is survived by his wife, Joanne; daughter, Cindy (Keith) Nelson; grandson, Ryan (Katy) Nelson and granddaughter, Courtney (Matt) Nelson; and great granddaughter, Elsie Blume, and great grandson, Brooks Nelson. He was predeceased by parents, Melvin and Anna Peterson.

Don will be buried at Scandinavian Cemetery on a date to be determined.
