HOLLAND –The Grand Haven volleyball team had a rough start to the OK-Red tournament on Wednesday evening.

Rockford took down the Bucs in four sets (21-25, 25-20, 20-25, 12-25), while West Ottawa won in three sets (27-29, 23-25, 21-25).

“We had opportunities to win both matches tonight, but in the end, made too many mistakes in each match,” said Bucs’ coach Aaron Smaka. “We continue to be able to compete with any team and have moments of brilliance. We will continue to work towards playing at that high level more consistently.”

Izzy Whittaker led the offense with 19 kills, while Kam Burbridge had 15 and Jillian Swierbut had 14.

Taylor Smaka chipped in 37 digs and three aces. Sara Webe had 44 assists and 24 digs.

Grand Haven will be at home on Saturday for the second round of the conference tournament.
