Jackie Schoop Obituary (1935 – 2022) – Des Moines, IA

Jackie (Jack) Lee Schoop, 86, of West Des Moines, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2022, peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.
Jack was born on October 1, 1935, in Lohrville, Iowa, and is the son of Herman and Wilda (Stokes) Schoop. He received his education in the Lohrville School District and graduated from Central College in Pella, Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. In 1958 he joined the Army, worked as a Medical Technician, and was honorably discharged in 1960.
In 1962, he married Marilyn Maude Springer in Marshalltown, Iowa. From this marriage, three children were born: Danette, Darcelle, and Darin.
Jack had a long career in the health field, which included positions in Iowa, with the state, city, and county. After working for 33 years as a laboratory supervisor, he retired in 1997 from the Polk County Health Department.
Jack had many hobbies and interests. He was active with bowling and golfing for over 40 years. He also enjoyed horseshoes, playing cards, gardening, and remodeling their home. He was a charter member of New Hope United Methodist Church, a member of the American Public Health Association and the Men’s Garden Club of Des Moines. He was involved with the Highland Park Kiwanis Club for 28 years and held various positions including president. He and Marilyn enjoyed square dancing, listening to music at Prairie Meadows, collecting antiques, and traveling. Jack spent a lot of time outdoors on the acreage and working in his shed, but his most treasured times were spent with Marilyn attending his children and grandchildren’s many activities and sporting events.
Jack loved helping others and was a volunteer with the Granger Ambulance. He was humble, witty and kind, and always enjoyed sharing a “Jack joke.”
Jack was proceeded in death by his father, Herman Schoop; mother, Wilda Ablett; and three brothers, Bob, Don, and Rich Schoop. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of West Des Moines; one sister, Sally Schutt of Alden; two daughters, Danette Beeson of Ashland, Missouri and Darcelle (John) Pogge of Bloomington, Illinois; and one son, Darin (Kim) Schoop of West Des Moines.
Jack is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Skyler (Josiah) Dycus, Landon Beeson, Ethan Pogge, Evan Pogge, Owen Pogge, Sydney Schoop, Tyler Schoop Sellers, Summer (Chris) Bondi, Kailey (Cole) Schumacher and Brennan Roland; two great-grandchildren, Connor and Crew Schumacher and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 7, from 9:30-10:30am at Iles Westover Chapel. Funeral service will also follow in the chapel at 10:30am. Burial will immediately follow at Iowa Veterans Cemetery. A luncheon will be provided following the burial at MorningStar Senior Living, located at 525 South 60th St., West Des Moines.
