Katherine “Kay” D. Mallicoat Obituary

Katherine “Kay” D. Mallicoat, 81, born May 3, 1941 in Grove City, PA, died November 5, 2022, in Rockford IL.

Kay passed away at home peacefully with family by her side, from complications of hip surgery and liver disease. Survivors include husband, Chuck; children, Teresa Bell Big- Canoe, Davis, IL, Donald Bell, Machesney Park, IL, Jo Ann Scott (Tim) Pecatonica, IL, Pam Castro, Rockford, IL. Grandchildren, Mallory Pettigrew (Jay), Danielle Scott (Lathaniel Best), Katelyn Castro, Michelle Redeker (Austin), and Joshua Scott; Great Grandchildren; Camden, Aliyah, and Callan. Siblings, Pat Unrue, Martha Coulter (Sonny), Joan Heasley (Denny), Tim Brown (Becky) in PA and Paula Paul (Bob) in NC and other extended family.

Kay worked as many as three jobs at a time as the sole provider for her and her three young children after her divorce. According to her children, she was a “mean mom” but she provided love and guidance to her children while showing them by example what hard work and determination could accomplish. On holidays and vacations Kay would load the kids in her old Ford station wagon and drive through the night to be with her family in PA.

Kay was very good with numbers and worked in the Engineering Dept of Woodward Governor for several years. She worked at Sundstrand for 17 years where she started as a quality control inspector. She continued her education and became a programmer of CNC coordinate inspection machines.

She learned to be so independent and self-reliant that when she married Chuck in 1983 some of the kids thought the marriage wouldn’t last longer than six months. They were proven wrong since Chuck and Kay would have celebrated 39 years in a loving marriage on November 12 of this year.

She joined Chuck at Fastener Eng./Lewis Machine for several years before his retirement in 2000. Kay also worked during the tax season for H&R block for nearly 20 years, in her later years she managed several local offices. Kay enjoyed cooking large meals for both family and friends during the holidays. Playing cards with her family was one of her greatest joys, with much teasing and joking always taking place.
