There will be an increase in fatal car accidents in Rockford in 2021

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – Rockford has seen a sharp increase in accidents this year, and Mayor Tom McNamara said it was unacceptable.

Over the past few years, there have been an average of about 7-15 traffic-related deaths in Rockford. Almost 30 deaths have occurred this year.

McNamara said drivers need to slow down.

“That is absolutely avoidable. There are a couple of things we can do with it, ”said McNamara. “Number one is that citizens can help us. You can put your cell phone down, you can stop paying attention to everything that’s going on in your own vehicle, you can slow down, you can put all of your electronic devices down and actually pay attention to the road. “

McNamara said the city is spending about $ 1 million on sidewalk and pedestrian safety.
