4 injured RV takes out Winchell’s – multiple injuries

A motor home slammed into the side of Winchell’s Donut House in Lakewood Monday morning.

The crash occurred at Winchell’s, 6801 W Colfax Ave., Lakewood, just before 7 a.m. Video footage from AirTracker7 shows the motor home crashed into the side of the donut shop.

Although West Metro Fire Rescue initially declared that there was no injury in the donut shop Ty Countryman, the Lakewood Police Department public information officer confirmed that several victims were injured inside the Winchell’s. The most notable was a man who was seated at a table that was directly hit by the vehicle and then was thrown across the space. WMFR stated that the injuries he sustained do not appear to be life-threatening. Winchell’s owners confirmed that one of their employees was taken to the hospital. It’s not clear how many patrons were hurt.

WMFR confirmed that two of four people inside the motor home were injured and transported to the hospital. The driver’s injuries are considered serious. Firefighters also rescued dogs from the motorhome, but it was not hurt.

The reason for the accident was not known at the time of the crash. Countryman stated that the motor home was travelling northbound on Pierce Street when it attempted to turn left onto westbound Colfax Avenue. Countryman explained that the left turn didn’t go through because it was not completed somewhere in the process. Countryman said that surveillance footage does not show reckless driving.

The technical rescue team from WMFR is on the scene to repair structural damage to the building. Crews are working on repairing the damaged area in order to ensure that it is safe to remove the motorhome.
