Brother Eugene Michael Mark Kammerer, OSB

Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, Wednesday, June 29, 2022. Monk of Saint Louis Abbey, Creve Coeur. He is survived by his sisters Renee (Patrick) McIntyre and Linda Smiddy and several nieces and nephews.

Eugene Michael Kammerer was born in Peoria, Illinois November 5, 1948. Born to Doretha Kammerer, he was partially raised by step-father Lyle Williams and by foster parents Agnes and John Speck, remaining close to their daughter Catherine Bailey. While attending high school at Spalding Institute he was baptized a Catholic and became an active parishioner of the Cathedral of Saint Mary, Peoria. After attending Illinois Central College he worked a variety of jobs before joining the Abbey of Saint Mary and Saint Louis in 1988. He was professed as a monk on September 4, 1989, and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Maryville University in 1998. He taught photography at the St Louis Priory School for almost thirty years. In his later years he suffered from diabetes and after a year-long struggle with the disease died peacefully in the monastery on June 29, the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

Services: The body will be received at Saint Louis Abbey, 500 S. Mason Rd., Creve Coeur at 6:15 pm, Tuesday, July 5, and the Church will be open until 9:00 pm The funeral Mass will be at 10 :00 on Wednesday, July 6, followed by burial in the cemetery adjacent to the Abbey monastery. Reception will follow in the monastery.
