Raymond Lobmeyer Obituary (1935 – 2022) – Rockford, IL

Sycamore, IL- Raymond Joseph Lobmeyer, 86 yrs 7 months, passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday morning August 17, 2022, at Silverado St. Charles Memory Care Community, St. Charles, IL.
Raymond was born at home on December 24, 1935, in rural Garden City, KS, the son of the late Louis Lobmeyer and Anna Ohmes Lobmeyer. He attended school at Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City, CO. At age 17, after high school graduation, Raymond enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War. In the Air Force, Raymond worked on missile development programs at Cape Canaveral, FL with portions served at White Sands in NM. One of the projects he worked on was Regulus, the first Air Force guided-missile. After the Air Force, he attended Kansas State University, graduating with an engineering degree.
Raymond was a hardworking and dedicated father and provider. He worked at John Deere Engine Works in Dubuque, IA where he specialized in hydraulic systems. He then moved to the Waterloo, IA John Deere plans, retiring from there. Shortly thereafter, he was recruited out of retirement to work for Caterpillar. He then moved to Minnesota and worked at Eaton Corporation then Sycamore, IL where he worked designing paving machines at the Barber-Greene company.
He was active in each community where he lived, for example, serving at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dubuque in various capacities as a member of the Knights of Columbus, or as the Town Clerk of Sageville, IA. He loved animals and over the years had several horses, many dogs, and a bunch of cats. He assisted his wife Deborah Lobmeyer in Waterloo, IA as they worked with people with disabilities doing horse therapy and they visited hospitals and nursing homes with their dogs.
They survived a tornado there and Raymond restored an old tractor using his engineering skills and used it to work the land. In Illinois, he became a Master Gardener and helped beautify DeKalb County and teach other people about their lawns and gardens. He also served as a treasurer for what became The Barn on Baseline Animal Shelter of Genoa, Illinois.
Raymond is survived by his children and their spouses, Raymond Joseph Lobmeyer II (Vicky) of Clear Lake, IA; DeAnn (Richard) Scarce of Mount Vernon, IA; Susan (James) Hill of College Station, TX; Janet (Robert) Nelson of Audubon, IA; his stepchildren Ladric (Natasha) D’Schommer-Grant of Minneapolis, MN; and Susan Mitchell of Sycamore, IL; grandchildren Michelle (Colin) Koch, Raymond J Lobmeyer III (Ashley), Virgil (Shelby) Lobmeyer, Karen (Matt) Nelson, Laura Scearce, James Hill III, Benjamin Nelson, Rebecca Nelson, Jeremy Mendelsohn, Aria D’Schommer-Grant; great-grandchildren Clayton Rand, Jordan Rand, Gage Koch, Lillian Koch, Eisley Nelson, Savanna Nelson, and Addison Sweeten.
In addition to his parents and his wife Deborah, he was predeceased by two infant children, twins Jeffery and Jay, and his siblings Dorothy, Edna, Marion, David, Carolyn, Donald, and Lucy.
A graveside service for Raymond Joseph Lobmeyer will be held at noon Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Sycamore, IL.
